ABOUT THE ARTIST & EDUCATOR

Fran D’atria-Romano is a native Staten Island artist and educator whose artwork is based on Staten Island history and New York themes.  She is especially noted for her aquatint etchings of the Staten Island ferries and trains as well as scenes of the New York skyline seen from Staten Island.  Ms. Romano has been working professionally in both education and the printmaking field for 40 years. Fran retired from her Arts Coordinator position at New Dorp High School June 2002.   However she continues to teach both painting and art history classes for the Retired Teacher’s Chapter for the UFT.  Fran has also taught college level art history courses for St. John’s University and Bronx Community College.  She occasionally  acts as a docent and lectures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

 

She holds a B.A. degree from City University of New York in Art Education, an M.A. degree in Art and Education and a second M.A. degree in Art History and Supervision from Kean College and is a National Board Certified Teacher and has a C.T.V. license for video production. 

 

She has exhibited her artwork throughout the USA in many galleries and museums and has been featured in ART SPEAK magazine.  She has supervised and curated both professional and high school art exhibitions for many years both locally and in New York City.  She has created workshops, seminars, training sessions, developed new art curriculum and coordinated conferences relating to art and education

She is a member of Manhattan’s prestigious Salmagundi Club, Pen and Brush Society, Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, and the Society of American Graphic Artists.  She is a board member for the S. I. Museum where her etching titled “When it was Only a Nickel” is on permanent collection at the museum.  Ms. D’atria- Romano has produced and directed art and educational documentaries for cable networks. In addition, Ms. D’atria - Romano has designed and implemented the Global Arts curriculum an interdisciplinary arts program for the NYC Board Of Education and helped to redesign the 1995 and 1996 Art Regents exams.  Fran has also designed The Staten Island Ferry Logo, which is used on shirts, mugs, umbrellas, tote bags, and cards, sold at the S.I. Museum.
